Rhode Island International Film Festival 2017

“This year’s Festival had a spectacular lineup of provocative and engaging new films and was a banner year for the Flickers’ screenings, forums, workshops, classes and parties,” added Shawn Quirk, RIIFF’s Program Director.

Over its six-day run, the Festival screened 310 films that included 113 World/United States Premieres from 48 countries including Cuba, Bosnia, Ethiopia, Croatia, Australia, Iran, Spain, Mexico, India, Italy, Croatia, and 34 states in the US. The filmmakers from these accepted films traveled from such countries as Russia, France, Serbia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Austria, Germany, and Brazil. The films featured such well-known actors as Jane Lynch (“Glee”), Tituss Burgess (“The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), Audra McDonald, Sharon Stone, Tyler Blackburn, T.R. Knight, Catherine Tate (“Doctor Who”), Gwyneth Paltrow, Idris Elba, Dana Ashbrook (“Twin Peaks”), Al Pacino, Olivia Wilde, Stephen Dorff, Catherine Deneuve, Helena Bonham Carter, Imelda Staunton (“Harry Potter”), and Robert Capron (“Diary of a Wimpy Kid”). The films for this year's Festival were selected from a record entry base of 6,217 submissions.

INDUSTRY AWARD WINNERS & SPECIAL FESTIVAL FOCUS:

Douglas Trumbull, renowned visual effects artist for such films as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” (which is celebrating its 40th Anniversary in November), “2001: A Space Odyssey,”
and “Blade Runner” received this year’s Inaugural Gilbert Stuart Artistic Vision (Lifetime Achievement) Award.

Johnny Wilson, visual effects artist for such films as “Ant Man,” “Doctor Strange,” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” was presented by Steven Feinberg with this year’s
RI Film & Television Office Dream Maker Award
